WordPress powers a significant portion of the web, and this popularity makes it a frequent target for attackers. WordPress supports a vast ecosystem of themes, plugins, hosting providers, developers, and third-party integrations. This creates a large attack surface.

WordPress.com reports that WordPress powers over 43% of the internet and commands a 61.4% share of the content management system market, more than all other CMS platforms combined.

An organization may secure WordPress itself but still be exposed through a vulnerable plugin, an outdated theme, a compromised administrator account, weak hosting security, stolen FTP or SSH credentials, malicious third-party code, poorly configured file permissions, and insecure APIs or integrations.

Some common WordPress vulnerabilities include:

1. Outdated Plugins, Themes, and WordPress Core

One of the most common security risks is running software with known vulnerabilities. Plugins and themes regularly receive updates that address bugs and security issues. When organizations delay updates, attackers may exploit vulnerabilities that have already been publicly documented. The risk is even greater when plugins or themes are no longer maintained.

Recommendation

Maintain an inventory of installed plugins and themes, and regularly review whether each component is:

  • Still required
  • Actively maintained
  • Receiving security updates
  • Compatible with the current WordPress version

2. Weak or Compromised Credentials

Administrator credentials provide powerful access to a WordPress website. Attackers may obtain passwords through: password reuse, phishing, credential-stealing malware, data breaches, brute-force attacks or credential stuffing.

A strong password alone is no longer sufficient protection for privileged accounts.

Recommendation

  • Multi-factor authentication should be enabled for administrators and other high-privilege users wherever possible.

  • Shared administrator accounts should also be avoided because they make accountability and incident investigation more difficult.

3. Excessive User Privileges

Excessive user privileges in WordPress occur when accounts are given more control than needed. WordPress includes different roles such as: Administrator, Editor, Author, Contributor and Subscriber

Giving users more permissions than they require increases the potential impact of a compromised account.

Recommendation

  • Organizations should follow the principle of least privilege: users should receive only the permissions required to perform their responsibilities.

4. Vulnerable Plugins and Themes

The WordPress ecosystem contains thousands of plugins and themes developed by different vendors and independent developers. Poorly coded or vulnerable extensions may allow attackers to:

  • Upload malicious files
  • Execute unauthorized code
  • Modify database records
  • Create administrator accounts
  • Redirect visitors
  • Steal sensitive information

Recommendation

  • Before installing a plugin or theme, organizations should evaluate the developer, maintenance history, update frequency, support activity, and security track record.

5. Insecure File Uploads

Many WordPress websites allow files to be uploaded through forms, media libraries, plugins, or user-facing applications. If file-upload functionality is not properly secured, attackers may attempt to upload malicious scripts.

Recommendation

  • Organizations should restrict permitted file types, validate uploads, limit execution permissions, and prevent executable code from running within directories intended only for media files.

6. Insecure Hosting and Server Configuration

WordPress security depends heavily on the underlying infrastructure. Weak server configurations can undermine otherwise strong WordPress control.

Common issues include: Excessive file permissions, outdated PHP versions, exposed management interfaces, poor SSH security, insecure database access, weak server credentials, unnecessary services, and improper directory permissions.

Recommendation

  • Website owners should understand which security responsibilities belong to the hosting provider and which remain their responsibility.

7. Poor Monitoring and Logging

Many compromises go undetected because nobody is actively monitoring the website. Warning signs may include: Unexpected administrator accounts, modified files, unusual login activity, new scheduled tasks, unexplained plugins, malicious redirects, sudden SEO changes and increased server resource usage.

Without logging and monitoring, attackers may remain inside an environment for an extended period.

Recommendation

  • Security monitoring should include both WordPress activity and the underlying hosting environment.

8. Missing Multi-Factor Authentication

An attacker who obtains a valid username and password may be able to log in without triggering obvious security controls. Multi-factor authentication creates an additional barrier by requiring another form of verification.

Recommendation

  • For privileged WordPress accounts, MFA should be considered a baseline security control rather than an optional feature.

9. Inadequate Backups

Backups do not prevent attacks, but they are critical to recovery. A compromised website may require restoring files, databases, configurations, or even rebuilding the environment entirely.

Backups should be:

  • Automated
  • Stored outside the production server
  • Protected from unauthorized modification
  • Retained for an appropriate period
  • Regularly tested

10. Assuming a Security Plugin Is Enough

Security plugins can provide valuable capabilities such as Login protection, malware scanning, file change detection, firewall functionality, and audit logging. But they are only one part of a larger security strategy.

A plugin cannot fully protect an organization from weak credentials, insecure servers, poor access management, vulnerable third-party software, missing backups, or inadequate incident-response planning.

WordPress security requires a defence-in-depth approach.

The Real Problem: Multiple Weaknesses Working Together

WordPress compromises often occur because several small weaknesses coexist. For example:

An outdated plugin may provide the initial entry point. Weak file permissions may then allow malicious code to be written to the server. Missing monitoring may allow the attacker to remain undetected, while inadequate backups make recovery much harder.

The individual weaknesses may appear manageable in isolation. Together, they can create a serious security incident.

Reduce the Attack Surface

The objective of WordPress security is not to eliminate every possible risk. It is to make compromise significantly more difficult, detect suspicious activity quickly, and recover effectively if an incident occurs.

Organizations can dramatically improve their security posture by focusing on a few fundamental practices:

  • Keep WordPress, themes, and plugins updated
  • Remove unused software and accounts
  • Enable MFA for privileged users
  • Apply least privilege
  • Secure the underlying server
  • Monitor website activity and file changes
  • Maintain reliable, tested backups
  • Prepare an incident-response process

WordPress security is not a single product or configuration. It is an ongoing process.

WordPress Security Checklist

Start by asking:

  • Is WordPress core up to date?
  • Are all plugins and themes actively maintained?
  • Are unused plugins and themes removed?
  • Is MFA enabled for administrator accounts?
  • Does every administrator still require administrator privileges?
  • Are file permissions appropriately configured?
  • Is the hosting environment patched and hardened?
  • Are website and server logs being monitored?
  • Are backups stored outside the production environment?
  • Has the website recovery process been tested?

If several of these answers are no, the website may already have unnecessary security exposure.
